Bay Citizen Releases Interactive Map Of VA Disability Claim Backlogs

The Center for Investigative Reporting and the Bay Citizen have released an online interactive map, updated weekly, that tracks the current backlog of veterans’ disability benefits claims across the country. The map shows that while some rural areas and less populous states have VA disability claims under control, more populated areas such as the East Coast, West Coast, and large cities, are struggling with months and years of lag, especially when appeals take place.

The map analysis shows that North Texas has some of the worst wait times in the entire country.

At the Waco, Texas VA claims office, 50,914 veterans are waiting for responses to their disability claims. The average wait to hear back about a disability claim is 403 days, and the average wait on an appeal is a staggering 1,211 days. Three out of four veterans wait more than 125 days for a claim.

At the Houston, Texas VA claims office, 37,994 veterans are waiting to hear if they qualify for veterans’ disability benefits. The average veteran waits for 302 days – about ten months – for a response or about 1,500 days if they need to appeal their case. A shocking 74 percent of veterans wait longer than 125 days to hear about their case.

Nationally, at all 58 VA claims offices, 824,273 veterans are waiting to hear back from the VA regarding their disability benefits. The average veteran waits for 257 days for their claim to process, while veterans who appeal a decision wait an average of 1,299 days. Of the veterans applying for benefits, 67.7 percent wait longer than 125 days to hear their claim decision.
