Thyroid cancer is not one single disease. Instead, there are several types of thyroid cancer that affect people in different ways. One person with thyroid cancer may only have a few months to live while another may get treatment and live a long and productive life. Thus, a diagnosis of thyroid cancer is not enough to determine whether or not an individual is eligible for Social Security disability benefits.

Each Case Will Be Considered on an Individual Basis

Every applicant for Social Security disability must establish the following in order to receive benefits:

  • You are unable to work because of your medical condition. This includes the work you did prior to developing thyroid cancer and other types of employment.
  • Your medical condition is expected to last for at least one year or result in death.
  • You otherwise qualifies for Social Security disability based on your work history.

These criteria apply to people with thyroid cancer and other conditions. Some people with thyroid cancer may also qualify for Social Security disability pursuant to the blue book cancer listing.

But Even Some People Who Should Qualify for Social Security Disability May Have Their Claims Denied

It is one thing to know that you meet the criteria for Social Security disability, and it is another thing to prove that to the Social Security Administration. The Social Security Administration routinely denies Social Security disability applications based on technicalities. If you fail to fill out the application entirely or if you fail to file a piece of supporting documentation, for example, then the Social Security Administration may deny your claim even if you otherwise meet the criteria. This can result in a significant delay in getting the benefits that you deserve.

If you believe your thyroid cancer qualifies you for Social Security disability then it is important to get your application right the first time so that you can get your benefits promptly. Please read our FREE Social Security Disability Fact Sheet today to learn more.
