You are suffering enough. Your bladder cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis have changed just about everything in your life, including your ability to work. You are eligible for Social Security disability benefits, but getting the benefits you deserve is often an uphill battle. Each year, the majority of initial Social Security disability applications are denied. You don’t want to suffer through the time and expense of an appeal if you can avoid it. Accordingly, it is important to be prepared with the right evidence and an experienced attorney before you file your initial application for benefits.

Medical Evidence

In order to get Social Security disability benefits, you need to prove that you have bladder cancer and that you qualify for benefits pursuant to a listing in the Listing of Impairments or in another way. This will require medical evidence such as:

  • Diagnostic tests such as CT scans, MRIs, cell biopsies, urine lab tests and cystoscopies
  • Pathology reports that show your cancer diagnosis
  • Operative reports that explain what happened during surgery, if applicable
  • Your doctor’s written medical opinions that are supported by test results and examinations

Additionally, you will need to provide evidence about the different treatments that have been prescribed, your compliance with those treatment plans, and the outcomes and side effects of those treatments. For bladder cancer patients, this could include medications, chemotherapy, and surgery, for example.

How a Lawyer Can Help You

Even with the right medical evidence, many Social Security disability bladder cancer applications are originally denied because of incomplete applications or mistakes made during the application process. An experienced and board-certified lawyer can help prevent this from happening to you by getting all of the documentation you need before you apply and by submitting a complete application that doesn’t leave disability examiners with lingering questions about whether your application should be approved.
