Don’t Discount Social Security Disability If You Have Chronic Liver Disease

You’ve heard the stories.

Social Security disability is difficult to qualify for; Social Security disability takes forever to get; Social Security disability is not worth the hassle.

But is it true or could you possibly qualify for Social Security disability if you suffer from chronic liver disease?

Don’t Give Up Before You Know the Facts

The Social Security Administration’s Listing of Impairments has a specific section for people with chronic liver disease. Section 5.05 of the Listing of Impairments allows someone suffering from chronic liver disease to get Social Security disability if they have one of the following:

Hemorrhaging in certain parts of the body that requires hospitalization and blood transfusion
Excess fluid in the peritoneal cavity or pleural cavity
Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
Hepatorenal syndrome
Hepatopulmonary syndrome
Hepatic encephalopathy

There are specific qualifications for each of these conditions that are further described in the Listing of Impairments.

Additionally, an individual with chronic liver disease may qualify for Social Security disability if that individual is unable to work due to the condition or the treatments for the condition and if the condition is expected to last at least a year or result in death.

Thus, a person with chronic liver disease should consider Social Security disability if he or she has one of the following conditions:

Cirrhosis
Hepatitis
Sarcoidosis
Liver failure
Liver cancer
Another liver disease or condition
