For 2026, the Social Security Administration (SSA) gave a 2.8% increase in monthly pay for people receiving Social Security Disability benefits.
Social Security gives raises most years to account for the ever-rising cost of living.
To give you a general idea of what people can get in Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits, these are the numbers after the 2026 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA):
- $1,630 per month is the 2026 national average for workers.
- $2,937 per month is the average disability payment for workers who also have spouses and children receiving benefits.
- $4,152 per month is the maximum possible SSDI payment for workers, but it’s rare.
SSDI is only for people who worked a substantial amount and paid Social Security taxes. You earn coverage when you earn enough credit in the Social Security system through work.
When you have to stop working for medical reasons, but you haven’t reached retirement age, you can apply for SSDI.
These monthly checks give you some breathing room when health problems leave you with strained finances.
Social Security Disability Insurance benefits are calculated based on your past earnings. Making more or less during your working years translates into larger or smaller disability payments.
It doesn’t fully replace your old paychecks. Your disability checks will be lower than your income when you worked.
Few people get the maximum payment over $4,000 per month because few people make high enough wages for a long enough time to max out their disability benefits.
The Texas disability lawyers at Morgan Weisbrod help people get disability benefits. We’ve helped thousands of people through the process. It’s a difficult process full of frequent rejections.
Having a disability lawyer doesn’t affect your monthly checks. Your disability attorney fee comes out of one-time, back benefits.

What Is the SSI Benefits COLA in 2026?
The other kind of disability benefits provided by Social Security are Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for people without significant, recent work records.
Because monthly SSI checks aren’t based on your past earnings, the government sets the same amount for everyone.
The SSI payment also went up 2.8% with the disability benefits COLA in 2026, reaching these amounts:
- $994 per month for an individual
- $1,491 per month for a couple if both people qualify for SSI
Those are the maximum amounts you can get from the federal government in SSI assistance.
Your SSI payment can be reduced if you receive some other kinds of benefits and assistance.

What Else Changes with the 2026 SSD COLA?
The size of your benefit checks isn’t the only thing that the annual cost-of-living adjustment changes.
With the COLA, Social Security also changes the amount you can earn from working and still qualify for disability benefits.
They call this “substantial gainful activity,” or SGA. Like all the other numbers, the SGA numbers are up a little for 2026.
You must earn less than these amounts from working in 2026 to have a chance at Social Security Disability benefits:
- $1,690 per month for most workers
- $2,830 per month for workers with blindness
Social Security puts visually impaired people in a special category because of the unique ways that blindness affects a person’s job. The higher earnings limit for people with blindness allows them to attempt working more with less fear of losing disability benefits.
Everyone who wants to get disability benefits, however, should be careful about working.
Benefits are meant for people who can’t work much at all, so even working a small amount can lead to a denial of benefits if Social Security thinks it’s a sign that your health limitations aren’t severe enough to warrant extra help.
Even with cost-of-living adjustments, you can see that Social Security Disability benefits aren’t luxurious.
Money is still very tight, but disability benefits can make the difference in allowing you a life of basic dignity and independence.
