Cushing’s syndrome is a serious medical condition that occurs when the body makes too much cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that is produced in the body’s adrenal glands. When the body produces normal amounts of cortisol, the hormone helps regulate blood pressure, it keeps the body’s cardiovascular system healthy, and it helps the body react to stress.

The consistently stressful nature of a military job can cause cortisol levels to be elevated for too long which can result in Cushing’s syndrome. In turn, Cushing’s syndrome can result in serious conditions including cardiovascular problems and diabetes, or death.

Symptoms of Cushing’s Syndrome

If you experience one or more of the following symptoms, you should discuss your medical condition with your doctor:

  • Obesity, especially in the trunk area, including the back of the neck, the collarbone, and the abdomen
  • A round, puffy, or moon-shaped face
  • Body and facial hair growth in women
  • Male pattern baldness
  • Acne
  • High blood pressure, hypertension, and heart disease
  • Deteriorating muscles and bones
  • Thinning skin, especially on the hands, as well as cuts, punctures, and scrapes that don’t easily heal
  • Fatigue
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Insulin intolerance and diabetes
  • Reproductive problems, including impotence, infertility, the absence of menstruation in women, and reduced libido

The symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome can mimic other conditions. Accordingly, it is important to get an accurate diagnosis so that you can begin treatment as soon as possible. After a proper diagnosis, medication can be provided to lower your cortisol levels which may decrease the symptoms of the condition and its serious long-term effects.
