Did you know that one out of three homeless persons in America is a United States veteran? Or that the majority of homeless veterans suffer from a physical disability, a substance abuse issue, or a mental illness?
Here are a few more facts about homeless veterans:
- Two out of three homeless veterans served in the military for at least three years.
- One out of three homeless veterans have been stationed in a war zone.
- One out of two homeless veterans served during the Vietnam War.
- 150,000 veterans spend at least one night per year without permanent shelter.
- Each night about 80,000 veterans go to sleep without shelter.
- 1.5 million veterans have shelter but are on the verge of homelessness.
- Veterans are twice as likely to become homeless than non-veterans.
Why are disabled veterans so often without homes and support? The sad truth is that many suffer from a combination of health conditions, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), paired with a physical ailment. These combinations of issues make it difficult not only for veterans to find and keep employment, but also for them to secure disability benefits and other services. Unfortunately, living in temporary shelters or the elements often only exacerbates these problems, leading to chronic homelessness.
It is vital for homeless, disabled veterans to understand that they may likely be eligible for veterans’ disability benefits – and that there are a number of non-profit organizations, programs, and services available to them to help get them shelter, basic needs, and financial support.
