Some veterans struggle to keep a place to live

Many veterans have a difficult time adjusting to life as civilians, and thousands of them have no place to call home each night.

Several factors increase the possibility that a veteran will be homeless

Certain risk factors may increase the chances that a veteran will be left without a place to call home. A veteran is more likely to be homeless if the veteran:

• Has a physical or mental condition that makes it difficult for him to work.
• Is struggling with an alcohol or substance-abuse problem.
• Has service-related injuries that have made a return to civilian life harder.
• Is living with a friend or family member because he cannot afford to rent or own a home by himself.
• Has trouble finding or holding a job.

For many homeless veterans, the slide into homelessness began because the veteran suffered a service-related injury or illness. If a veteran who suffers from a disability does not take advantage of the chance to receive disability payments, the veteran may struggle to pay his bills. The veteran may have a hard time finding and holding a job while dealing with serious health concerns.

The United States Department of Veterans Affairs is committed to eliminating homelessness among veterans by offering a range of services and benefits. These include helping veterans find safe and affordable housing, working with veterans to help them protect their homes from foreclosure, offering job training programs to at-risk veterans to help them gain new skills, and providing health care.
