Every year, the Social Security administration releases a series of publicly available reports detailing current workload data and other statistics related to the agency.

If you are applying for Social Security disability benefits or you are appealing a denied claim, a key report to review is the Average Wait Time Until Hearing Held report, formerly titled the “NESTAT Report.” Released monthly, it estimates the average length of time applicants must wait before their hearing or appeal is scheduled.

Wait times are averaged for Social Security offices located in major urban centers. Generally, the more densely populated an area is, the longer the wait time. In Texas, reports are generated for offices in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Fort Worth.

May 2016 Wait Times in Texas

As of May 2016, the reported wait time for a hearing in the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review are as follows:

  • Dallas (Downtown office): 15 months
  • Dallas (North office): 13 months
  • Fort Worth: 12 months
  • Houston (North office): 12 months
  • Houston (Bissonnet office): 17 months
  • San Antonio: 16.5 months

The wait time has increased in recent years. In March 2013, the average wait times in Texas were as follows: Dallas Downtown: 11.5 months, Dallas North: 10 months, Fort Worth; 10 months, Houston North: 8.5 months, Houston Bissonnet: 10 months, and San Antonio: 10.5 months.

With 2016 wait times exceeding a full calendar year in many parts of Texas, you want to do everything within your power to secure your Social Security disability benefits on the first try and without the need for an appeal.
