A long wait for a decision on a Social Security disability application can be financially devastating and emotionally difficult. As you wait for your application to be processed, you may find yourself burning through your savings, going into debt, asking friends and family for help, and even losing your home.

Because of long waits and growing backlogs, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has created a special list, called Compassionate Allowances, which serves to expedite the Social Security disability application process for anyone suffering from certain types of serious diseases and conditions. Launched in December 2007, the list of Compassion Allowances has slowly grown to include many diseases, illnesses, and conditions that the SSA feels need immediate attention.

Which Medical Conditions Are Included?

The illnesses chosen for the list are usually both extremely serious and easy to prove. Those suffering from the conditions often need immediate financial support.

Currently, there are more than 200 conditions on the list of Compassionate Allowances, and more are being added each year. The list includes a wide range of ailments, including certain types of cancers, cardiovascular issues, infantile syndromes, and cognitive conditions.

How to Apply to the Compassionate Allowances Program

There is no special application process for the Compassionate Allowances program. Instead, you should apply for Social Security disability in the same way you would if you had any sort of disability or illness. When the claims processor reviews your file, it should be fast-tracked through the Compassionate Allowances program, if appropriate.

If your application is complete and if it clearly proves that you suffer from a health condition on the Compassionate Allowances list, your benefits could be approved in just a few weeks. If your application lacks medical evidence or is missing other information, the SSA will contact you and your approval process will be lengthened. It is important to note that while your application may be fast tracked, you will not receive any additional benefits for having a condition on the Compassionate Allowances list.
