You got the mail out of the mailbox at your home in McKinney, Irving, or elsewhere in Texas—expecting to see the usual stack of bills and junk mail. However, this time there was a letter that you thought you should open because the return address indicated that it was from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

You Have Been Approved!

The letter shared the news that you have been waiting a long time to hear. The SSA approved your application for Social Security disability benefits. The letter states the effective date of your benefits and the amount that you will receive in addition to other information about your rights and responsibilities. If you do nothing, you should begin receiving the amount stated in the later on the date specified in the letter.

While you may have reason to celebrate right now, it is important to know that you have the following ongoing responsibilities with regard to your Social Security disability eligibility:

  • You must report any improvement in your medical condition.
  • You must report any change in your ability to work.
  • You must report any change in your actual work status.

Any of these things can affect your continuing qualification for Social Security disability benefits.

Your Fight for Disability Benefits May Not Be Over

Before you file the letter away, it is important to consider whether the benefit amount is correct and whether there are any changes that you should be reporting to the SSA now.
