I have had several clients tell me they are waiting for their SSI benefits so they can get the housing help they need or start getting food stamps. There is no need to wait to apply for that help because SSI benefits only consist of a check each month and Medicaid benefits.  There are no other “provided” benefits with SSI benefits.

If you are in need of housing, food stamps, help with school loans, house payments, car payments or even immigration status, you need to go ahead and seek help from the agencies that provide that type of assistance.   Please do not wait for SSI benefits to be awarded to apply for assistance because you may be able to receive help in those other areas long before your SSI comes around.

If you do not know where to go to apply for the assistance you need with housing or certain financial aid, a good place to start is to dial 211 on your phone.  This will connect you with United Way, who can point you in the right direction to start getting some relief while you wait for Social Security to process your SSI claim.
