Bellaire VA Lawyer: Program Awards Customized Homes To Veterans

A national non-profit group is building specially customized housing for Texas veterans with service-connected disabilities and their families—and their providing these homes to qualifying veterans mortgage-free.

San Antonio-based organization Operation Homefront was started in 2002 to provide emergency assistance to United States service people and their families. In partnership with Chase Bank, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America, Operation Homefront started the “Homes on the Homefront” program, which has awarded more than 100 mortgage-free homes to eligible wounded warrior, veteran, and military families.

Up to this point, existing properties have been donated to the program by partner banks; however, earlier this year the program started working with construction company Meritage Homes Corporation to build new homes, from the ground up, designed for easier access for veterans with mobility issues.

According to Phillippe Lord, West Regional President for Meritage Homes, accessibility features will include wider doorways and lower surfaces.

One of the customized homes was awarded to Army Sgt. Aaron Kumamoto, his wife Erica and their infant son, Logan. Kumamoto lost a leg to an IED in Operation Iraqi Freedom and returned home to a small apartment not designed to accommodate his needs.

“I don’t know how to express how thankful I am,” Kumamoto told reporters. The veteran is looking forward to living in a house with a yard, where his son will be able to play.

Kumamoto’s home is being built in Converse, Texas.
