Reporting Social Security Disability Fraud: Facts & Reminders

Social Security disability fraud hurts everyone – and most importantly it makes it more difficult for those with valid disabilities to receive benefits. If you know someone who is taking advantage of the Social Security system and profiting from deceit, you should absolutely report that person. However, reporting a case of Social Security fraud is a serious matter and should not be taken lightly.

Before you accuse someone you know of Social Security disability fraud, ask yourself the following questions:

• Do you know exactly why the person is receiving Social Security? How do you know?
• Do you know the full extent of why they receive their benefits and their medical history?
• Do you know why they are not able to perform their job, or what their physical limitations are?
• Do you know if they have any mental disabilities?
• Have you ever heard them speak about committing disability fraud?
• What exactly makes you suspicious of this person’s disability?

Generally, you should understand that some disabilities may not be easy to see and that just because someone can play with their children in the back yard or mow their lawn does not mean that they can handle employment. You should also understand that you may not know all of the facts of the case, or you may know information only through gossip or conjecture.

However, if you do believe that you have enough information to be suspicious of someone you know who collects Social Security disability benefits, you can and should report them to the Social Security Administration (SSA). You can do this by calling the fraud hotline at (800) 269-0271, by going to the SSA website, or by mailing the SSA. When reporting fraud, be sure to stick closely to the facts, avoid your opinion, and give as many details as possible.
