Social Security Disability Benefits & Homelessness in Texas

It is a sad, hard truth; all too often, disability and homelessness go hand in hand. Each night, about 500,000 Americans are without a permanent shelter, and a significant number of these people suffer from a mental or physical disability. While some of these homeless have successfully applied for Social Security disability benefits, others do not know they are eligible or do not have the resources or ability to apply.

Here are three hard truths about Social Security disability benefits and homelessness, as outlined by the National Healthcare for the Homeless Council:

  • Disability is a common cause of homelessness. Disability can prevent a person from working, and unemployment often leads to a lack of financial support. It is no surprise that an accident, illness, or chronic health condition can suddenly mean you are no longer able to provide yourself with the basic need of shelter.
  • Being homeless further harms your health. Homelessness and disability can be a downward spiral because the physical and mental stress of being homeless is not good for your health. In addition, being transient or homeless can mean that you do not get regular access to healthcare or that you do not have the benefit of seeing the same doctor over several visits.
  • The homeless disabled have face difficulties in securing Social Security disability benefits. Even if they deserve benefits, the disabled homeless sometimes lack medical records to prove their condition or else can’t afford to comply with doctor’s orders. In addition, those without homes may simply not have the stability to successfully complete the application or the appeals process.

According to the Annual Homeless Assessment Report, four out of ten homeless people in America are also disabled. It is extremely important that each of these people receives the SSDI or SSI benefits that they need and deserve.
