Begin by asking a few key questions during your initial meeting.
How many Social Security disability cases have you dealt with?
Have you ever taken on a disability case like mine and involving a disability similar to mine?
What are the possible and likely outcomes of my case? Why?
Have you received any additional training specifically regarding Social Security cases?
How does your office handle these cases? What does the entire process look like?
How long do you think my case will take?
If I have questions, how available are you? Will you answer my questions, or will someone else in the office answer them?
Who else in your office would be assisting with my case and what role would they play?
Will you keep me informed as my case progresses?
How far would you take my appeal?
How do you bill your clients and what is an estimate of how much my case will cost?
Remember, when asking these questions it is not just the answers that count, it is how the attorney answers the questions. If you are looking for a candid, no-nonsense attorney, ask yourself if he is answering your questions in that manner. If you are looking for an attorney that will keep you up-to-date with your case and explain legal technicalities, look for those qualities in the attorney as he or she answers questions about your case. And, most importantly, always remember to trust your instincts. If you feel good about your interaction, you will probably continue to work well with your lawyer.
