Moving? Let the Social Security Administration Know About Your Change of Address

We've moved spelled out in blocksThere is a lot to do when you move, and notifying the Social Security Administration (SSA) of your change of address may not be your top priority. Yet, if you move – either across the street or across an ocean – it is vital to let the SSA know about the change.

How to Report a Change in Address to the SSA

Your change of address should be reported if your initial claim is under consideration, if you are in the process of filing an appeal, or if you are already receiving benefits.

There are three different ways to report a change of address to the Social Security Administration:

  • Go to their website to fill out a change of address form online (note that representative payees cannot change a recipient’s address online).  
  • Call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 during their business hours to report your new address.
  • Stop by or call your local Social Security office to report your new address.

Be sure to give them your claim number, your old address, your new address, and your new telephone number, if applicable. If you are moving due to a change in marital status or another big life change, you may want to inform the SSA since these life events can also affect your disability benefits.

Special Steps If Your Social Security Disability Application Is Still Pending

If your application for Social Security disability benefits has been filed, but a determination about your eligibility has not yet been made, your claim may need to be moved to another Disability Determination Services (DDS) agency.

If you are currently waiting for a disability hearing before an administrative law judge, you will need to have your case heard by an administrative law judge in your new state. Your case will likely go to the bottom of the list for hearing dates in your new state.
