Is Your Disability On The List Of Compassionate Allowances?
Around the country, millions of disabled Americans are waiting months and even years for their Social Security Disability Insurance applications to be processed and approved. During those long wait periods, many of these people find themselves burning through their savings, going into debt, asking friends and family for help, and even losing their homes. In some cases, severely disabled applicants die before they are approved for support.
Because of long waits and growing backlogs, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has created a special list, called Compassionate Allowances, which serves to expedite the SSDI application process for anyone suffering from a certain types of serious diseases and conditions. Launched in December 2007, the list of Compassion Allowances has slowly grown to include one hundred different diseases, illnesses, and conditions that the SSA feels need immediate attention.
The illnesses chosen for the list are usually both extremely serious and also easy to prove – unless some more vague medical issues such as depression or a chronically injured back, these conditions are severe enough that applications do not often need a thorough review process. At the same time, those suffering from the conditions often need immediate financial support. Under this program and the Quick Disability Determination (QDD) program, the SSA estimates it will cut down its national backlog by 150,000 cases.
The list of Compassionate Allowances includes a wide range of ailments, including cancers, cardiovascular issues, infantile syndromes, and Early-Onset Alzheimer’s disease.
