What Is Sustainable Gainful Activity (SGA)?

A:

In order to receive Social Security Disability benefits, you must suffer from a health condition that renders you unable to work to support yourself. But how does the Social Security Administration (SSA) define “work”?

According to the SSA, a person must not be able to engage in Sustainable Gainful Activity (SGA) in order to qualify for disability benefits. They define Sustainable Gainful Activity as any employment that results in net earnings of a certain monthly amount. This amount changes annually along with the national average wage index. In 2012, the monthly SGA amount for non-blind disabled individuals is $1010. The monthly SGA amount for the blind is $1690.

In other words, you may make under the monthly SGA amount and still be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. However, if you make more than that amount, you must report this information to your local Social Security office and have your case reviewed.

If you would like to return to Sustainable Gainful Activity after a disability but are unsure if you will be able to support yourself, you may take advantage of the SSA’s trial work period.
