Can I Receive VA Disability Benefits For My Gulf War Illness?

A: For years following the Gulf War, thousands of veterans reported a myriad of strange and debilitating symptoms that ranged from chronic pain to headaches to skin issues to digestive problems. Only somewhat recently, however, has the US Military and the Veterans Affairs Department come forward with theories that large numbers of solider were made ill by nerve gas drugs, pesticides, oil well fires, and a number of other chemical hazards present during the war. Today, researchers believe one in four Gulf War veterans suffer from the syndrome.

If you have displayed the varied and mysterious cluster of symptoms associated with Gulf War Illness, and if you served in the Southwest Asia Theater of the war, you could certainly be eligible for veterans’ disability benefits. In fact, in 2010, the VA secretary urged veterans who had unsuccessfully applied for disability benefits for Gulf War Syndrome to reapply in light of new information regarding the illness.

Because little is known about the cause of Gulf War Syndrome, the chronic, multi-symptom illness is currently considered a presumptive condition; that is, when requesting disability benefits, veterans do not have to prove that their illness was directly caused by their service.
