After receiving your Statement of the Case and completing your Form 9, you now have the option of requesting a personal hearing for your appeal. If you have never navigated the VA benefits appeal process before, you may be wondering what this option means and whether it is worth pursuing. Fortunately, you do not have to navigate this process alone. The following is an overview of the personal hearing option for your Texas VA disability benefits claim.

What is the personal hearing?

The personal hearing is a meeting that includes the applicant, their representative, and the individual from the VA who is deciding on the case. There are two different types of personal hearings. These include hearings with someone from the local Texas VA office, and hearings with a member of the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.

What are my options if I want to pursue a personal hearing with a Board Member?

There are several different types of personal hearings if you want a hearing with a member of the Board. These include:

  • A hearing in Washington, D.C., at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals.
  • A videoconference hearing that takes place at your local Texas VA Office, while the Board member is in Washington D.C.
  • A hearing at your local Texas VA Office with a Board member present.

If I decide that I want a personal hearing, how do I go about obtaining one?

Requesting a personal hearing with the local Texas VA office is as easy as sending in a writing request to the specific office location. The request can be sent at any time. Requesting a personal hearing with a member of the Board of Veterans’ Appeals is done using the VA Form 9 that was included with your Statement of the Case.
