Your mesothelioma diagnosis has changed everything. The doctors tell you there is no cure for your mesotholioma, but there are treatments that can possibly extend your life expectancy. Yet, the rest of your life isn’t going to be easy. The mesothelioma is going to make it difficult to breathe, do your regular activities, and even work.
Social Security Disability May Help Ease the Finanical Stress
If you qualify for Social Security disability, you may receive monthly benefits that help alleviate the financial stress of being unable to work while you are sick. However, Social Security disability benefits are not automatically awarded even for serious conditions such as mesothelioma. Instead, you are going to have to apply for benefits and you are going to have to convince the Social Security Administration (SSA) that you qualify for such benefits.
Here’s How You Can Do It
Malignant mesothelioma of the pleura is included in Section 13.15 of the Listing of Impairments. You will need medical documentation, including medical test results and a doctor’s report, to establish that you have the condition and to provide evidence of the extent, type, and location of your cancer. If you fail to provide complete documentation or to fill out other parts of your application completely and accurately, the SSA may deny your application and you may not receive the benefits to which you are legally entitled.
People with mesothelioma often have strong Social Security disability cases. The information provided above is not meant to scare you away from applying for Social Security disability, but instead is meant to encourage you to fill out a complete and accurate application so that you can get the benefits you deserve.
